The Contract for UK Production

In mid-1997, following the publication of the Danish Quality Guarantee, the industry decided to introduce a special UK contract which would be compatible with key aspects of UK pig welfare legislation to be introduced on 1 January 1999. This contract thus assures UK retailers and consumers that producers under the contract comply with UK legislation and meet the highest welfare and safety standards as well as delivering a number of benefits, which are unique to the Danish pig industry.

All producers supplying pigs under the contract for UK production are subject to an independent audit carried out by the Danish Agricultural Advisory Centre.

Summary of the Contract
Compliance with the Contract for UK Production will place numerous responsibilities upon the producers. These requirements are specified in a Product Standard which covers the following areas:

  • Pig identification and traceability
  • Feed
  • Herd health and hygiene
  • Treatment of sick or injured pigs
  • Housing and equipment
  • Feed and water provision
  • Management
