The Danish co-operative system

Production Chain
The Danish pork and bacon factories are co-operatives owned by the pig producers. The unique structure provides the basis of a fully integrated production chain from the farm to delivery to customers. All the Danish bacon factories and their owners, the pig farmers, are members of an umbrella organisation, Danske Slagterier (DS), represented in the UK by the Danish Bacon and Meat Council (DBMC).

Communication
The co-operative system has ensured excellent communication throughout the production chain. DS, the National Committee for Pig Production and the factories themselves, ensure that the Danish pig producers are kept totally
up-to-date with market developments, as well as the latest technical developments and new management techniques to improve their production performance.

Traceability
In recent years, traceability has been recognised as fundamental to delivering food safety assurances in modern food production systems but the Danish
co-operative system has meant that excellent traceability has been offered for 40 years or more. All pigs are delivered directly to the abattoir and can be easily traced.
