Quality Standards
Many quality standards are nationally enforced through DS, ensuring
that all Danish bacon and pork products meet similar criteria for
quality. If necessary, statutory disciplines are used to ensure that
producers keep up to the required standards.
DS is also responsible for co-ordinating a number of quality initiatives,
such as the Danish Quality Guarantee and the Contract for UK Production,
and a national programme for control of salmonella.
In addition to world class facilities such as the Danish Meat Research
Institute and the Danish Meat Trades College, the Danes have an excellent
network of agricultural colleges and other research establishments.
All owners and managers of farms in Denmark must possess a 'Green
Certificate' which is awarded after periods of formal study.
Trade Policy
DS also has a vital role in representing the industry’s interests
in the area of trade policy both in Denmark, the EU and many overseas
markets.
With regard to EU relations DS has a Brussels office:

Marketing
The organisation also has a responsibility for co-ordinating a series
of marketing and promotional campaigns both in Denmark itself and
in key export markets such as the UK, Japan, Germany and the Scandinavian
countries.
Funding
Danske Slagterier is funded by the Danish pig producers through a
statutory levy (from 11th October 2004 DKK6.25 = 58p per pig approx.)
and a subscription from its member companies (from 1st October 2003
DKK4.5 = 42p per pig approx.). This produces an annual turnover of
around DKK339m (£32m approx.) which helps fund a major programme
of industry activities.
